Kim Chun-hwan transforms paper from a medium of information into an artistic material with its own physical properties through the repetitive act of tearing and folding discarded printed matter. His canvases condense performative time and moments of creation and decay within layers of accumulated paper, offering a silent resistance to the rapid pace of modernity.

김춘환의 작업은 종이를 정보 전달 기능에서 해방시켜 하나의 물질로 마주할 수 있도록 한다. 파리에서 유학하던 시절 우편함과 거리에서 끊임없이 쏟아지던 잡지와 전단지는 작업의 출발점이 되었다. 작가는 인쇄물을 찢고, 오리고, 접는 반복적인 행위를 통해 화면을 구성한다. 마치 일궈진 밭을 연상시키는 화면에는 작가의 작업과 시간이 층층이 축적된다. 종이의 물성을 드러내는 작업은 빠르게 소비되고 사라지는 현대의 속도에 대한 조용한 저항이다. 작품은 멀리서 보면 한 점의 추상화 같다. 그러나 다가갈수록 종이의 두터운 질감과 다양한 패턴이 나타나며 서로 다른 시간의 정보가 응축되어 있는 모습을 보여준다. 작가에게 종이는 곧 물감이다. 작가는 종이를 매개로 빠르게 지나가는 생성과 소멸의 순간을 정지시키고 감각에 몰입할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

Kim Chun-hwan’s work liberates paper from its function as a medium of information, allowing it to be encountered as pure matter. The magazines and flyers that incessantly poured out of mailboxes and onto the streets during his student years in Paris became the starting point of his practice. The artist constructs his canvases through the repetitive actions of tearing, cutting, and folding printed matter. On the surface, which evokes the imagery of a tilled field, the artist’s labor and time are accumulated layer upon layer. This work, which reveals the materiality of paper, serves as a quiet resistance against the rapid pace of modern life, where things are quickly consumed and discarded. From a distance, the pieces resemble abstract paintings. However, as one draws closer, the thick texture and diverse patterns of the paper emerge, revealing a condensation of information from different points in time. For the artist, paper is equivalent to paint. Using paper as his medium, he halts the fleeting moments of creation and decay, offering an opportunity to immerse oneself in sensory experience.
