김춘환은 현대 사회를 뒤덮는 이미지와 정보의 흐름 이면의 보이지 않는 층위를 탐구한다. 작가는 파리 유학 시절 우편함과 거리에 끊임없이 쌓이던 잡지와 광고지에서 작업의 출발점을 발견했다. 정보를 전달하던 종이는 그의 손을 거치며 찢고, 구기고, 붙이는 반복적인 과정을 통해 본래의 기능에서 벗어나 하나의 순수한 물질로 다시 태어난다.

작가에게 종이는 곧 물감이다. 수없이 축적된 종이의 층은 마치 일군 밭처럼 화면 위에 시간의 흔적을 새기고 이후 표면을 절단하는 과정을 통해 내부에 감춰져 있던 색과 결, 주름이 드러난다. 작품 제목인 ‘Undercurrent’는 이러한 표면 아래의 흐름, 즉 겉으로 드러나지 않지만 축적된 시간과 기억, 물질의 에너지를 의미한다. 절단은 파괴가 아니라 숨겨진 내부를 드러내는 과정이며 작품 안에 또 다른 풍경을 만들어낸다.

멀리서 바라보면 작품은 하나의 추상회화처럼 보이지만 가까이 다가갈수록 종이의 두터운 질감과 층층이 쌓인 구조, 미세한 색의 변화가 드러난다. 빠르게 소비되고 사라지는 이미지의 시대, 김춘환은 생성과 소멸의 순간을 붙잡아 관람자가 종이의 물성과 시간의 흔적에 온전히 몰입하도록 이끈다.

Chunhwan Kim explores the unseen layers beneath the constant flow of images and information that permeates contemporary society. The starting point of his practice can be traced back to his years studying in Paris, when his mailbox and the streets around him were constantly filled with magazines and advertising materials. Through repetitive acts of tearing, crumpling, and attaching, Kim strips these printed materials of their original function as carriers of information and transforms paper into pure material.

For Kim, paper is paint. Countless layers of accumulated paper inscribe traces of time across the surface, evoking the furrows of a cultivated field. He then cuts into the surface, revealing colors, textures, and folds that had remained concealed within. The title ‘Undercurrent’ refers to this flow beneath the visible surface—the accumulated time, memory, and material energy that remain unseen. Cutting, therefore, is not an act of destruction but a process of revealing what lies within, creating another landscape inside the work.

From a distance, the work appears as an abstract painting, yet as the viewer approaches, its dense materiality, layered structure, and subtle variations in color gradually emerge. In an age when images are rapidly consumed and discarded, Kim captures moments of creation and disappearance, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the material presence of paper and the traces of time embedded within it.
