Woonchul Yang explores the fundamental order of existence and the cosmos through geometric forms and the materiality of lacquer, expressing enduring principles of connection and cyclical change with luminous colors and refined visual structures.
양운철은 “누가, 무엇이, 어떻게 존재하는가”라는 존재론적 질문에서 작업을 시작한다. 작가는 주객의 경계가 허물어지는 연기(緣起)적 세계관과 제행무상(諸行無常)을 기하학적으로 그려낸다. 방형 캔버스에 그린 ‘c’ 연작은 알파벳 c의 반원 형상을 변주하여 천원지방(天圓地方)의 우주를 현대적으로 구현해냈다. 화가는 옻칠 작업을 통해 공예와 회화, 동양화와 서양화의 경계를 넘나들면서 궁극적으로 오랜 시간을 버텨낼 수 있는 회화를 제작한다. 물리적 세계는 끊임없이 변화하지만 옻액으로 고정한 우주의 원리는 끝없이 존속한다. 양운철의 작업에서 도형으로 환원된 세계 구성 원리는 맑은 색과 옻칠 작업을 통해 청명하면서도 영구적으로 유지된다.
Yang Woonchul begins his artistic exploration with the ontological inquiry: “Who, what, and how does something exist?” The artist geometrically visualizes the worldview of Dependent Origination (Pratītyasamutpāda), where the boundaries between subject and object dissolve, and Impermanence (Anitya). In the ‘c’ series set within square frames, the semi-circular shape of the letter 'c' is rhythmically varied, reinterpreting the ancient Asian cosmos of Cheonwonjibang through a modern lens. Through the practice of ottchil (Korean traditional lacquering), the painter blurs the boundaries between craft and painting, as well as Eastern and Western art, while creating pieces capable of enduring the passage of time. Although the physical world is in a state of constant flux, the cosmic principles anchored by the lacquer sap persist indefinitely. In Yang’s oeuvre, the foundational principles of the world, reduced into geometric forms, are preserved with vibrant clarity and permanence through his lucid colors and lacquering process.
