정상곤은 논리나 재현을 넘어 감각 그 자체로 풍경을 포착한다. 그의 화폭 위에서는 색채가 하나의 언어가 되고, 붓질의 리듬이 감정의 흐름을 대신한다. 휘몰아치는 즉흥적 붓질과 지우기를 반복하며 만들어진 화면은 강렬한 에너지와 동시에 깊은 여운을 남긴다. 그의 대표 연작 《Still Life》는 흐드러지게 피어있는 꽃다발의 생명력을 포착한다. 정교하면서도 표현적인 붓질로 구현해 낸 환영적인 정물화는 꽃에 얽힌 추억과 사연을 담아 영원히 시들지 않는 꽃으로 화면 속에 피어있다. 아름다움이 절정에 달하는 탐스러운 꽃들은 현실에서는 빠른 시간의 흐름에 따라 시들어 버리지만, 정상곤의 캔버스에서는 여전히 꽃을 받던 시간 속에 놓여 있다. 바니타스 정물화처럼 쓸쓸하면서도 멜랑콜리한 그의 꽃 정물은 추억을 간직하고픈 본연의 욕망을 덤덤하게 담아낸다.
