Choi Hyunhee creates spaces of protection and repose within tranquil forests bathed in warm light, weaving timeworn objects and gentle illuminations into intimate landscapes of inner refuge.
최현희는 따뜻하게 빛이 드는 평온한 숲을 통해 보호와 안식의 공간을 형상화한다. 이팝나무꽃이 활짝 핀 밝은 숲과 대비되는 일상의 사물들은 유년기의 다정한 추억 속으로 감상자를 초대한다. 오래된 책, 포토박스, 전화기, 피아노 등 최현희의 캔버스에는 시간의 흐름을 간직한 물건들이 정겹게 묘사되어 있다. 마치 섬세한 명암 묘사로 알려진 17세기 화가 조르주 드 라 투르의 작품에서처럼, 촛불과 햇살은 최현희의 숲에 깊이감과 환상성을 부여한다. 특히 초는 작품 밖에서의 시간과 작품 내부의 시간을 연결하는 장치로, 감상자를 명상의 숲으로 초대한다. 따라서 생성과 소멸이 반복되는 숲은 따사로운 빛과 어우러져 마음의 안식을 선사할 수 있는 내면의 풍경으로 변모한다.
Choi Hyunhee portrays spaces of protection and repose through tranquil forests illuminated by warm light. Bright woodland scenes filled with blooming Chinese fringetree flowers invite viewers into cherished memories of childhood, while everyday objects placed in contrast with the luminous landscape evoke a sense of familiarity and nostalgia. Old books, photo boxes, telephones, and pianos are lovingly rendered throughout her canvases, each carrying traces of time. Much like the works of the seventeenth-century painter Georges de La Tour, renowned for his delicate treatment of light and shadow, candlelight and sunlight imbue Choi’s forests with depth and a dreamlike atmosphere. In particular, the candle serves as a device that connects the time outside the painting with the time contained within it, inviting viewers into a contemplative forest of meditation. Ultimately, the forest merges with gentle light to become an inner landscape that offers comfort and emotional refuge.
