박윤경은 문자를 중첩하거나 해체하고 왜곡하여 청량한 색감과 운동감이 느껴지는 추상적 이미지를 만들어낸다. 작가는 영국 유학 시절 읽을 수 없는 문자가 하나의 추상 이미지처럼 다가오는 경험을 했고 이를 계기로 언어를 작업의 중요한 소재로 삼게 되었다. 신조어와 관용적 표현, 문학적 표현처럼 특정 문화권에서만 이해되는 언어는 배경을 공유하지 않으면 의미를 온전히 전달하지 못한다. 이러한 간극은 언어라는 기호가 가진 구조적 한계에서 비롯된다. 언어는 사회적 약속으로 이루어진 기호이지만 기표가 담아내지 못하는 기의의 영역은 언제나 남아 있기 때문이다.
인간은 언어라는 불완전한 매개를 통해 서로를 이해하려 하지만 끊임없이 실패한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 인간은 서로에게 닿기 위한 시도를 멈추지 않는다. 박윤경의 회화는 이러한 관계와 연대의 가능성을 시각화한 작업이다. 해체된 문자의 획들은 서로 뒤엉켜 있지만 끝내 끊어지지 않고 연결되어 있으며 작품을 서로 기대어 설치하는 방식 또한 서로를 지지하며 존재하는 공동체의 원리를 은유한다.
시폰으로 이루어진 반투명한 화면은 주변의 빛과 공간, 관람자의 움직임을 작품 안으로 끌어들인다. 언어에서 출발한 작가의 관심은 공간과 자연으로 확장되며 문자는 더 이상 읽히는 기호가 아니라 하나의 이미지이자 공간으로 변화한다. 시시각각 변화하는 박윤경의 회화는 관계 속에서 끊임없이 생성되는 소통의 가능성을 탐구하며 관람자를 서로를 이해하고 연결하려는 열린 관계의 장으로 초대한다.
Yoonkyung Park creates abstract images with refreshing colors and a dynamic sense of movement by layering, deconstructing, and distorting letters and words. While studying in the UK, she experienced unfamiliar, unreadable letters as abstract images, which led her to adopt language as a central subject of her practice. Neologisms, idiomatic expressions, and literary phrases that are understood only within particular cultural contexts cannot fully communicate their meanings without shared background knowledge. This gap arises from the structural limitations of language as a system of signs. Language operates through socially constructed conventions, yet there always remains a realm of the signified that the signifier cannot fully contain.
Human beings continually attempt to understand one another through the imperfect medium of language, only to encounter repeated failures. Nevertheless, we never cease trying to reach one another. Park’s paintings visualize this possibility of connection and solidarity. The strokes of deconstructed letters intertwine and overlap, yet remain connected rather than breaking apart. Her installation method, in which paintings physically lean against and support one another, likewise serves as a metaphor for the principle of community: individuals sustaining one another through mutual support.
The translucent chiffon surfaces absorb the surrounding light, space, and movements of viewers into the work. Beginning with language, Park’s exploration gradually expands toward space and nature, as letters cease to function merely as readable signs and instead become images and spatial forms in their own right. Constantly shifting in response to their surroundings, Park’s paintings explore the possibilities of communication as something continually generated through relationships, inviting viewers into an open field of connection where understanding can be sought and renewed.
